Beach vs Beach

I'm originally from the UK, and have always been fascinated by beach culture. No, I'm not a surfer or anything like that, I'm more interested in how people interact with this magical environment and in this project I have put together images from both the UK and Australia to show how people from the opposite sides of the world embrace their beaches in different ways.

Bondi Beach, Australia
The below shots of Bondi Beach in Sydney offer a vision of complete beach escapism. There are no arcades or touristy attractions, the beach itself is the main event, and people immerse themselves in it with no hesitation.
Colourful, captivating and interactive the beach cannot help but lure you in.
Southend On Sea
In contrast, the below shots showcase the UK seaside town of Southend on Sea.  This iconic seaside location represents the tone of many British seaside towns; with a heavily kitsch backdrop echoing the 50's and 60's, but with a decaying facade of penny arcades and tourist tat offering a distraction from the beach itself it's a very different beach experience to the shots above.
Despite being taken in the peak of UK Summer it was fascinating to me to see the real reluctance of people to fully embrace the environment. They sit fully dressed, almost scared of interacting with the beach/water, and seem more interested in the attractions away from the water, than the water itself.
