HOW CAN A NATIONAL NON-PROFIT BETTER ENGAGE DIVERSE AUDIENCES?

The American Architectural Foundation, a national 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that educates the public about the power of architecture to improve lives and transform communities, hired BYO to develop a range of engagement strategies to strengthen their relationship with their community.
an audience-centered process
The design process for this project was largely centered on research. In order to develop delightful social communications strategies that would engage AAF’s audiences and fit their organizational style, we needed to seek first-hand insight from key players.

BYO conducted a variety of research activities to get down to the core of the organization’s needs. We asked staff members to envision their constituent engagement goals, which provided the framework for the rest of the work together. The highest priorities were to engage consistently, connect + catalyze, and expand knowledge.

our solution: a platform for engagement and action
AAF acts as a platform for engagement and action. Operating like a platform allows for an open and simple yet robust infrastructure that exposes and celebrates their community. AAF should act like a marketplace or a bazaar for ideas and as an enabler of change. By recognizing and owning that, it’s possible to build the communications infrastructure and processes to support it.

enabling implementation
After our discovery and strategy development phases we provided training workshops to AAF to help them implement the strategies we had developed together. In addition, we were with them every step of the way as their launched their campaigns, giving them the support they needed while helping them to build capacity and implement in a sustainable and low-cost way.
