Lighthouse Sea Hotel: Invigorated Heritage

Competition entry - Young Architects Competition 2016
Proposal for a touristic resort invigorating the area of an old lighthouse.

Tourism is nowadays an essential part of sustainable development of regions. It encourages local people to keep their traditions as the newly formed touristic trend promotes experiences in-situ: not just architecture and history,  but also culinary excelences and local habits. This approach has not only social benefits (passing tradition and identity to further generations), but also economic (people are motivated to stay in the region as they can earn money) and environmental (the new forms of tourism are environmentally sensitive and respectful). Therefore a sensitive redevelopment of a former Lighthouse into a tourist facility can bring a number of positive elements to the area of Siracusa.

Lighthouses embody extraordinary perception potential - lonely guards of the coastline, nowadays presenting the legacy of the past undigitalized era, are fascinating for those who respect history and tradition, and crave for intimate and remote places.
The target guest seeks for special experiences and loves to explore the area. He also cherishes privacy on his holiday. The resort can be percieved as a point of departure for his voyage of discovery in the region as well as a calm and private rest spot at the end of an exhausting day. It is a shelter or an escape place, soothing tired minds and bodies, which provides space for relax and meditation.

First of all, the Siracusa province had been analysed in terms of both natural and human-made heritage. The network of potential points of interest has formed a base for the concept - sensitive and omnipresent promotion of uniqueness of the area. The resort is formed of a number of self-reliant units, each oriented towards a very specific local attraction as well as towards the sea. The front desk and a laundry are situated in the current buildings southwest from the Lighthouse.

The masterplan is based on the previously mentioned network and at the same time provides the temporary inhabitants with an undisturbed connection to the sea. As the cliff descends, the view is opened also for the units located closer to the Lighthouse. All units are served by a „neckless“ of solidified paths, gently oriented towards the local dominant, the Lighthouse tower, constantly resembling the identity of the site.
The units‘ placement along the coastline ensures that the dominancy of the Lighthouse is not suppressed; quite the contrary, it is gradually enhanced from the sea towards the tower. However, the overall height of the structure does not exceed 4 meters.
The layout is conceptually based on a clear geometry of interlaced rectangles and a square-shaped core. The navigation is straightforward - the guest is invited to the protected and framed entrance. When he opens the door, the main feature, the undisturbed view towards the sea, immediatelly opens. The bed is equipped with a high headboard - to ensure the privacy of the sleeping area. The protected exterior terrace is a natural continuation of interior living space. The entrance hall gives space to an integrated storage space. All installations are directly related to the technical room and the bioswale pot.
The resort is making the most of the attractivity and natural uniqueness of the surrounding area by promoting the local heritage. It is situated on the edge of the cliff, exposed to natural forces, but providing a safe shelter for its inhabitants. As the accommodation capacity is split into small replicable units, the design is sensitive to the ecosystem - the construction period is reduced to a minimum due to off-site pre-fabrication and the bedrock is only impaled with a few steel piles. The design is contextual and realistic, the target group is clearly defined.
