Friends on King

Overview:

Live Brief course allows students to work with real live clients. This project introduced us to Ravi Prashad owns a non-profit café named Parliament on King that volunteers to help refugees in Australia get experience for hospitality based opportunities.

Challenge:

To find an aspect of Parliament on King that can be improved and create a design solution for it.

The Solution:

To gather an efficient network of student bodies that are willing to help volunteer at the café
Design a cost effect advertisement for Parliament on King that can easily be digitally shared and printed in nearby universities and colleges.
Concept:

The main focus of this design brief was to understand refugees, at the time the Syrian refugee crisis had peaked and so I researched deeply into the cause of the crisis and the reasons as to why certain countries were reluctant to take these refugees in.

Countries who declined to take the refugees in refused due to reasons such as xenophobia, lack of migration experience, religious and cultural discrimination. With this in mind, I made empathy the foundation of my design solution.

I saw the opportunity to improve the café through volunteers and sought to find out the obstacles people faced when wanting to volunteer. One of the main obstacles was volunteering opportunities were not always widely advertised.

The solution I designed for this issue was to contact humanitarian clubs in universities such as University of Sydney, UNSW, UTS, and Macquarie about the volunteering opportunities at Parliament on King. Aside from this, I had to create print and digital advertisements that Ravi can easily send to these clubs that was low cost but effective.

I made illustrations for the advertisement in black and white so they could be printed on white or colored paper and still be eye catching. The overall feel of the advertisements was to be down to earth, homey, and folksy as that was the atmosphere of Parliament on King.
