3rd Annual Vidcon
T-Shirt Design
A t-shirt design for the attendees of the World's largest gathering of online video creators and fans, Vidcon. The 2012 event location is the Anaheim Convention Center, which was my main inspiration for this design. The following is a walkthrough of my concepts and procedures to turn this idea into an appealing composition.
The building itself is very memorable and unique, so I knew I wanted to start by building a loose interpretation of the main architectural elements. I then added and arranged shapes as needed to balance the composition.
The addition of clouds as a complimentary visual element gives the design a greater sense of depth and imagination, and also serves to break up the sharp edges that dominate the rest of the composition. I then added a banner to divide the lower third, and give more balance to the image as a whole.
The next step was deciding on a color scheme. The shirt is to be distributed to thousands of people, so it was important to appeal to any age or gender. I chose a slightly desaturated red and white scheme for the design, to be printed on blue shirts.
In addition to the large back graphic, there was also a required front pocket graphic with more detailed information about the event. I chose to incorporate a cloud and only a single color, as to not compete with or take away from the main illustration on the other side.
