Chuck Burke's profile

Graphics-Driven Design at the Chicago Tribune

A centerpiece visual element: I have a background in both news page design and infographics, so here I saw an opportunity to amplify data that typically might have become a small supporting graphic in the news layout.
Infographic framework: In this recurring feature about neighborhood real estate, I created an infographic-driven page-design template that highlighted the large amount of data we had available.
Incorporating data into illustration: In a visually interesting coincidence, the chart resembled the shape of continental Europe, and a design centerpiece was born.
Illustrating with data: It's often perilous to display different datasets on top of one another like this, but the approach brought some life to the annotations—showing the market's ups and downs alongside the Fed's response.
Outside the box: This graphic started out straightforwardly, in a typical rectangular space. But as graphics editor, I collaborated with both the graphic artist and the news page designer to create an unconventional shape that emphasized the huge range in the data.
