House CAÑERO in Córdoba, Córdoba (Spain)
Single-family house with a sculptural staircase
Cordoba is a city of more than three hundred thousandinhabitants located on the banks of the Guadalquivir River. It was the capitalof the southern province of Hispania during the Roman time and later thecapital of the Islamic Caliphate of Córdoba, which included most of the IberianPeninsula. Due to this ancient and glorious past, building regulations are verystrict, even in areas which are distant from the historic center.

The building is compound by two different volumes thathang over the ground floor and occupy the first and the third bay, opening tothe street and a backyard respectively. The first volume contains thechildren’s space and the second one the parents', while the common spaces are spread on the groundfloor, forming part of a single continuous space that indicates the limits ofthe plot. The program is completed by a small terrace that includes a one laneswimming pool.

The core of the house is a three heights atriumthat occupies the second bay and hosts an imperial stair. The flights runfreely in the void between the compact volumes, curling to themselves in order to reach the landings.Once there, small halls work as connection chambers to protect intimacy and simultaneouslyas lamps that light the atrium.

The façade of the building expresses pretty clearlyits composition, a closed volume finished with cement-bonded particleboard standsover a steel profiles fence. In both cases, the openings are disguised, thus deletingdetails in favor of a more abstract image of the house, although fulfilling the regulations by following theestablished lines.
