Moriles is a town of three thousand inhabitants, entirely dedicated to fine wine, in the heart of Cordoba’s countryside. The clients were a migrants couple who wanted to return to their hometown after retirement. They owned an old family house which needed extensive renovation due to its bad condition. After some conversations regarding the costs of the works implied, they decided to build a new house on the same plot.

The house major reflects the typical townhouse structure, a double bay with the first one opening to the street and the second one to the patio. There is a third bay that contains the service areas and is aligned transversally to the others, completing one side of the patio. Every bay is covered with a traditional gableroof, partially hidden from the street by parapets that crown the façades. The gables lie on sloping concrete slabs which shape the second floor as a sequence of naves.

The program is articulated around the house “core”, which works as a vortex, concentrating the diverse circulations and the main rooms on both floors. The core is strong but soft: a double-height space overlooking the patio and the sky through a light-shaft, so the stairs are bathed in natural light. This metal carpet literally hangs from the upper gallery through steel bars, being suspended in space.

The façades are strongly influenced by the local building tradition, incorporating thresholds, copings, window dressings and clad pilasters. Nevertheless, all these different elements have been processed and homogenized until developing a net of moldings that brings a strict order to the composition. In the patio, the grid adapts its rhythms to every situation, making all the openings fit together precisely.
