Centenary of Federation Federal Government Australia

centenary of Federation Parade
Federal Government Australia
The Centenary of Australian Federation in 2001 attempted to engage with complex debates about Australia's identity and history, focusing on issues of democracy, gender, reconciliation between Indigenous and non-Indigenous Australians and established national mythologies.

The 'Journey of a Nation' on January 1 2001 was the biggest street parade ever held in Australia. It intended to represent Australia's development since 1901 with a large array of thematic floats, 'push units', and 6,000 costumed performers and participants. Several leading designers were enlisted to create the floats and costumes that were organised within 11 sections including: 'Nations Within a Nation', which celebrated Indigenous culture; 'War and Peace', which explored Australians at war; and 'Helping Hands', which recognised the work of community organisations and volunteers.
