Copa Arquitectura Design Competition

This design intends to promote development of and create interaction between three separate site use groups; youth soccer community, school community, & new micro-business entrepreneurs. The pavilion was conceptualized as the site’s central node, offering each group their own specific area but minimizing the proximity between programmatic divisions. This leads to an increased visibility for vulnerable start-up businesses, as well as increased interaction between school activities and extra curricular athletics. In addition, the three user groups sharing the facility will create a vibrant neighborhood destination with consistent activity seven days of the week.

Affordability and adaptability are the driving ideas behind the materials and construction methods of the pavilion. Conceptualized as a series of rearrangeable boxes sheltered by a broad corrugated metal roof, the structure is provided by repurposed shipping containers. Spaces needing increased security and protection from the environment were placed within the containers, while spaces more suitable to open air were inserted between. The design is to serve as a prototype; through attentive detailing the structure can be unbolted, disassembled, packed into it’s own shipping container structure and relocated with relative ease.

Primary visitor entry to site.  Micro-entrepreneur shops in foreground, soccer pitch to the right.
Micro-entrepreneur shops are housed in upcycled shipping containers offering occupants a weatherproof and secure space to store and sell goods.  Bleachers climb from the soccer pitch to the community garden spaces located on the roof of each container.
Temporary shops such as produce or famers market sellers are housed for events in open air spaces between containers.
A primary walkway divides the market area from the athletic facilities.  The walkway defines an axis linking the existing school building with the new soccer pitches.
