Khun, Himachal Pradesh
Making stories and learning art, 6000 feet above sea level
This trip was part of the LETS - Learn English Through Stories project, IDC, IIT Bombay funded by the TCTD centre.
We spent more than a week in Khun Village in the Himachal region where we worked with a local government school.
Apart from the art workshops and testing the english reading app with the school children - we had a chance to explore
the region as well. We lived in a local homestay on a steep hill, and walked 1.5 kms to the school everyday.
The purpose of the workshops was two-fold: turning children into content creators, by helping them create contextual
and relevant storybooks about their own regions, and an attempt to change the attitude towards art as a taught subject
in schools. Over a short span of time we were able to link these issues and make the local schools realize the importance
of having a time allotted specifically for art along with having a well stocked library to encourage reading. We did this
by simply democratizing the process of making a storybook.
Coniferous trees, blue skies, mountains, wild flowers, fruits, animals and the daily life of the locals were all reflected in
stories that the children wrote and images they drew. As a part of this project we created a storybook called 'Khichidi'.
