D&AD Monotype 2015: film retrospective

Response to the D&AD brief by Monotype: create a new visual language for film advertising using only type. My response is for Italian film director Michelangelo Antonioni and his trilogy on modernity and discontents from the early 1960s. Antonioni is tremendously influential yet largely taken for granted. His groundbreaking style differs to what we are used to today by seeking to communicate a mood/emotion over a specific message, making his movies compelling, mysterious and understated. My work focuses on the unconventional love explored in the three films using Italian typefaces and colours sympathetic to the sixties and combines the digital with the handmade in the same way that Antonioni's films are rustic yet polished and glamorous.
