Graphic Design Award by Yamaha

The brief for this project requested the submission of designs for marks, symbols and pictograms which express the theme of Yamahas design philosophy and ethos ‘Kando’ in a universal way, meaning “for the heart to be deeply moved”.

As a result, 1100 pieces from 69 countries worldwide were submitted. In the first trial 15 pieces were chosen. The final review was carried out and the head of jury Neville Brody as well as the Yamaha Design Section Panel Members spent several hours discussing who would be awarded the commemorable first time Grand Prize before announcing my design ‘Kando’ as the official Grand Prize winner of the Graphic Design Award by Yamaha 2015.
The mark expresses the passion of music and motor through merging the emotional and visual stimulus of movement and sound.

Executed through creating forms with light the mark reflects a composers hand gestures influenced by music’s universal ability to break language barriers communicating the emotive qualities of music.

The organic nature is intended to be aesthetically pleasing and comforting, yet provokes a feeling of spontaneity which sparks interest, reflecting emotions experienced by musicians and motorbike enthusiasts when engaged in their passion.

The continuous line refers to infinity, unity and harmony evoking Yamahas pursuit of Kando and the universal connection of people.

Creating the mark using light echoes the lights whizzing by a motorbike rider at night while reflecting the fast fluid movement of a motorbike’s engine.

The use of white represents purity and joyful life experiences communicating the spirit of Kando.

The submitted mark was in its static state, moving forward the intention is that the mark would move and be created in real time in front of the viewer/user/customer.
