American Trade Hotel
Panama City, Panama, 2013
Renovation and interior design of four abandoned buildings in varying styles, from Colonial to Art Deco, in the up and coming Casco Antiguo neighborhood of Panama City. The project includes a hotel with 50 guestrooms, restaurant, bar, library, courtyard, pool, jazz club and event spaces. We were inspired by the local architecture from the era of the construction of the Canal. We looked at modernist Mexican furniture by designer Clara Porset and lighting fixtures from the Secession and French 1950’s. We brought in Spanish Colonial antiques and worked with local artists on commissioned pieces throughout the buildings. The goal was to create spaces that felt collected, residential and safe — a refuge from the grittiness of the neighborhood. We took the opportunity to experiment and invent a new type of luxury rooted in the local and the handcrafted. The resulting spaces are light and tropical and elegant, and they speak of a place that’s always been a cultural crossroads.
