Samaritans: Typographic Response

Background:  The Samaritans are a charitable organisation, that listen to peoples’ troubles. They are open 24 hours a day. My main inspiration was the reference to time in the book. The main focus for the Samaritans was the time; 10pm-3am and 3am-8am. It is during these hours that the chapter describes the loneliness, the slowness of time and the calls for help that they receive.

Creative Response:  This typographic outcome, represents a 24 hour period. The book states “white is the colour of loneliness” and it refers to the night as “the black and inky-blue sky”, so by using blank white pages at the beginning and end of the book, it represents the time outside the crucial ‘night-watch’. The core chapter is sandwiched in the centre of the creative response using grey pages to represent the darkness and the text has been structured to emphasise the time passing slowly.

The book was presented in A4 format which allowed much greater scope for using typographic techniques and the creation of space, to suggest a greater feeling of loneliness for the reader.
