Created on the regenerated site of a nineteenth century gasworks, Westergasfabriek is an award-winning multi-functional cultural space that brings together the urban and the natural realm.

 

Developed through extensive community consultation, the 11.5-hectare masterplan incorporates historic landscape styles and post-industrial buildings to explore how our attitudes to the environment have changed since the Industrial Revolution. The composition of recycled paving materials, soft planting and water systems proposes a sustainable new approach in which we become participating partners, balancing our own needs with those of the environment.

 

This concept is expressed through every element of the design, from the facility to drain the stone-lined lake to accommodate festival crowds, through to the mix of native and selected plants which visually expresses the dynamic between our desire for order and nature’s sustainability imperative.
