Gateway To Aamchi Mumbai

Gateway To Aamchi Mumbai

GATEWAY TO AAMCHI MUMBAI includes pictures of Gateway area and around and I feel it’s the representational microcosm of the mad macrocosm that we live in, that is India as they speak of the city’s beauty, harsh realities, power, living, hopes and dreams and so is my theme GATEWAY TO AAMCHI MUMBAI as the photographs will let viewer to delve into the city of dreams via Gateway route.
Better With Age
(People)

This photograph is of an old man outside Gateway of India. With creases on his face and gray hair gives undaunted look into the lenses. He is wearing a golden coloured wrist watch and is holding a folded newspaper. Here I’ve placed the subject along the line(ROT) which means he is considerably off center and therefore creating an additional point of interest. Placing him right in the center of the frame could have resulted in an ‘awkward’ shot. I feel exposure is perfect and honest in bringing out austere and contemplative sense of the image . With focus on his face and white shirt brunette man stands out against dull background with play of light and shadow.I also like the chain on background which epitomize battle and struggle with old age and poverty.

Holy Gateway
(People)

This is a photograph of a holy man who spends his entire day at Gateway praying for good fortunes of the tourists by putting divine and pure tilak on their foreheads and givng them flowers and Prasad for their Midas touch. In this photograph I’ve purposely placed the Head Tilak and Puja Basket of my subject(priest) which I believe are the pivotal things for his job on the intersecting points(acc. To Rule of Thirds) which are also natural points of focus for the portrait here. Also subjects falls on the left vertical line(ROT).Also I tried playing with Light and Shadow here by keeping right side of the priest in dark drawing viewer’s attention towards the near centre part of the photograph and allowing enough light to fall on his kurta which make him stand out against the dull and blur background. His bag and other puja related stuff also form subject of secondary importance for the onlooker.
Morning Paper Ataraxia
(People)

No matter whenever you plan your trip to Gateway of India. You would always find a group of earlybirds on concrete sitting area, chitchatting, doing yoga or reading newspaper with the sun rise.I found this man religiously going through his Marathi newspaper on the back side of Gateway of India i.e the side from where you board ferry.
I feel the allure of the photograph lies in the fact that unlike most of the photos, here background is much more rich in colours than the foreground but still foreground proves to be stronger than the background and this was possible only because of Depth of Field captured.Man’s bright white kurta stands first in seeking attention followed by his hand, the newspaper and his spectacles. Then viewer goes inside and tries to figure out doleful ferries in the background. On digging deeper one finds that hand of the person lies on one of the intersection points as well(ROT).
Pital-Patal
(People)

Roaming around the place got this shot of three young and pretty ladies in cheerful shades of bright Yellow and Magenta/Pital-Patal(in Hindi) which is audibly depicting the strong bonding between them and speaks volumes of India’s closely knitted culture.
Arches Turn 90
(Place)

This is the photograph of right- front arche of Gateway of India. Here symmetry is the capital of the photograph.I feel expore plays chief role in bringing out thcomprehensive look of the kodak.A little less or more of exposure would have destroyed the refinement of picture. Here correct exposure allows viewer to appreciate detaied carvings and each individual brick of 90 years old monument.Sharp contrast of Black and white on lower half of the picture attracts attention.
When Outline Divides
(Place)

This is a picture of one of the side arches of Gateway of India designed in Indosarasanic style. While I was looking through the view finder the overall frame immediately grasped my attention and I found the idea of arch OUTLINE DIVIDING THE FRAME and play of light and shadow quite inviting and wanted to capture the frame there and the.
Thespian
(Place)

This is Kodak of an old building which I found on my way to Gateway of India.A very dull but attractive building with few shops inside looked mysterious to me and I wanted to capture it.This single storey structure has a rooftop full of weeds and wild vegetation.A man sleeping can also be seen here.
Bon Voyage
(Place)

This is an early morning shot where after a good night sleep ferries are being taken to the boarding station/port by ferry men.Reflection and early morning light adds to the beauty.
Sanchar Samachar
(Place)

This is a picture of Postal Service Office in main Mumbai.Passing by the building, this brightest colour combination ever-Trio of Red,Yellow ang Ggreen caught my attention and I wanted to capture th frame.
