DESIGN ACTIVISM: You're Welcome ;)!

MOTHERLODE a design guerilla collaborative consisting of design activists and my own design activist group; PRODIGIOUS

The bombing of the Fountain was conceptualized by Chenette Swanepoel and Alastair Findlay to form part of the Cool Capital Biennale Grand Finale. The team from MOTHERLODE was responsible for the planning and execution of the event.

The idea was to make a statement - how ever transient - to critique of the current state of design in public spaces. By countering the brutalism of stonewalls and iron bars with the use of fabric and paper flowers, MOTHERLODE wanted to draw attention to the inappropriateness of the existing design solution. Through these urban interventions, MOTHERLODE hopes to foster positive transformation and an awareness of the role design.

The entrance to the city of Tswane deserves a considered design solution, representative of its friendly and hospitable people. That is why we chose the slogan "you're welcome".

Some pictures of the process. We started at 3a.m in the morning in order to make it a massive surprise for passers-by in the morning. This was a great time to purple-up those Monday-blues.
YOU'RE WELCOME ;)!

Let's return the Fountains Valley circle to its original state and break down the boulders that hides it. These boulders show the FIFA soccer world cup of 2010 BUT ONLY SEEN VIA A HELICOPTER. Who will actually get the opportunity to see this?

Not the public.
