Urban Energy Center

Urban Energy Center
Sustainability & Social Design Project for GOOD Magazine
The Urban Energy Center project was spurred by a challenge from GOOD Magazine. They asked students to research an issue relating to sustainability in their local area. I chose to focus on the Toxic Triangle of the Bay Area which includes Oakland, Richmond, and Bay View/Hunters Point. All three communities face the same environmental issues of environmental injustice due to toxic waste and superfund sites.

My goal was to create a potential community center on Angel Island which sits literally at the heart of the issue, that would be a center for energy and sustainability research. It would also be a museum for the community, a conference center for activists, and a place where people could participate in workshops regarding these issues. Funds would go back into the communities and transportation/entry fees would be waived for residents of the Toxic Triangle.
