-DENSE ECOLOGY RESEARCH & PERFORMANCE COMPLEX DESIGN

"50% Green", as the theme of prophase urban ecology research and the concept of performance complex design, embodied critical thinking about urban form, architectural  application of geometry prototype and detailed design capability.
 
The focus of  this studio was dual-fold: first, as macro strategy, to study the existing urban built environment of Hongqiao Green land, Shanghai - currently an isolated city green island surrounded by diverse urban programs; and second, as micro tactics, an exacting design process of theater complex was required and developed into details.
 
"50% Green" presented the vision of paralleling exact same amount green program with other urban programs. It conveyed the critical thinking that ask for more green space in contemporary high-density citys. This notion was not an utopian urban vison but has studies and strategies as support. The project focused the close relation between the geometry prototype of urban ecology and its corresponding effectiveness. The description of "Urban Green" must be specific to prototype form to embody its value in real urban environment - the specific research of several cities and general study about prototypes both depicted this well.
 
Two major halls were to be provided - a 1200 seat grand theater and a 600 seat multipurpose studio theater (black box). On one hand, the overall design followed "50% Green" strategy as it is raised in the prophase analysis and was expected to creat a new urban form in the area. On the other hand, both interior and exterior environment is up to the technical standard of concert hall, including the acoustics design and stage design.
