Angular Expression
Our Packaging team has worked hard to introduce a new packaging design
that uses our strongest brand asset – the device itself. A simpler and purer
opening system that eliminates the need for a drawer removes unnecessary
components, while a neutral background emphasises the product on the
cover, and within.

The Packaging team’s aim was to “proudly introduce our devices and
services, while personifying our collective design principles.” The result is a
system built of simple, acute angles and bold visuals.

How do you design a mobile phone for €15?
As feature phones are performing more and more like smartphones with
higher resolutions, touchscreens and basic browser capabilities, low-cost
devices allow the newly connected to move directly to mobile Internet usage,
allowing them to be a broadcaster and global networker for the first time. As
such, a basic 2G mobile is magic in its owner’s hand. But how is this magic
created? Read here for our designers’ insights.

Nokia to Microsoft Mobile
With the completion of the acquisition marks an important step in bringing
Nokia and Microsoft Corp. together as one team, a process that is well under
way with the imminent first Microsoft branded mobile.
Microsoft continues to deliver new value and opportunity, working closely with
a wide range of partners, providing platforms, tools, applications and services
that enable them to make exceptional devices. With a deeper understanding
of hardware and software working as one, the company strengthens and
grows demand for Windows devices.

People Made: The Design Museum
‘People Made’, an exhibition on Nokia design, covered more than 20 years of
Nokia product making and explored how the company has been instrumental
in changing the lives of millions of people around the world.
The show charted design innovation, starting with the first mass-market
handset, the Nokia 1011 in 1992 and takes a speculative look forward, as
Nokia designers discuss their role in shaping the future.

Vitra Design Museum
Microsoft has partnered with Vitra Design Museum to see digital technology
enhance the visitor experience at the Alvar Aalto exhibition. The use of
devices with Near Field Communication (NFC) supports a focus on the visual
object. This aims to create a more in-depth and clearer learning experience
with additional information such as images, film and audio. With NFC, the
digital experience is non-disruptive, as visitors benefit from easy and instant
interaction, while wireless charging enables staff to manage the devices
simply and effectively. As a result, a greater understanding is garnered
around visitors' behaviors, which can then be used to better the navigation
and experience within.

World Design Capital
WDC is a biennial project that celebrates design as a tool for improving social,
cultural and economic life. WDC 2014 is hosted in Cape Town, which sees a
yearlong series of design-related events, promoting design thinking as an
innovative and effective means to solving various issues faced by modern
society. Participating in six key WDC events, Microsoft Mobile forms a key voice in the
collective discussion about design for a better future. We will focus on the role
of design in our award-winning products, and more broadly, about our design
principles that make technology more human.

Microsoft Mobile Library
Founded by Tony Elvin and supported by Microsoft and the World Design
Capital, Project iKhaya le Langa provides a library of high-tech devices.
Utilizing the free Wi-Fi infrastructure already in place in the precinct, a range
of mobile devices loaned by Microsoft enable residents to access the internet
with the aim to digitally empower the local community. Work stations with
seating, wall panels and lockers for the safe storage of devices have been
provided, as well as training on how to use the phones, tablets and services is
provided.

Microsoft Tune
With our first Microsoft branded device comes an entire new family of sounds,
including the Microsoft ringtone. Following on from the Nokia ringtone legacy,
the Sound Team have created an audio signature with as much impact its
predecessor.
