Infinite Expanding Possibility of the Circle—Exhibition
The circle—a geometric shape whose entire exterior is at equal distance from its center—is an instinctively familiar shape to all of humanity, and is profoundly related to human anatomy. In other words, the circle is a primordial, fundamental and elementary archetype. One continuous curve completes the circle’s form without any vertices. The resulting organic formal quality of the circle has led people to associate the shape with various symbolic meanings including cyclicality, fertility, peace, eternity, free-and-easiness, vitality, centricity or integrity. Among the countless associations, integrity and cyclicality are particularly closely related to the natural and cosmic order, and are thus the central foundations for the symbol associations of the circular form.
The project hypothesizes that the efficacy of the circle holds in various situations that exceed the current specifications. The goal of the project is to demonstrate the unlimited visual expansion of the circular form through its formal, functional, aesthetic and visual properties as well as its unique relationship with circular motion.
The project extrapolated from the formal qualities and nature of the circle. The resulting conceptual developments informed the creation of a series of graphics through which various experiments were conducted to explore the formal potential of circles. The visual artistic experiments revealed the powerful analogical capacity inherent to the circle, and anticipated a promising resource for discovering unique circular expressions hitherto unknown. The circular expressions as proposed by the project encourage a re-imagined optical experience for viewers, and challenges the conventional bounds of the conceptual and practical application of the circular form.
The final goal of the project is to discover unique circular expressions through the aesthetic, conceptual and theoretic exploration of the circle as a form and an appearance. The project also aims to demonstrate and propagate the unlimited expandability of the circle as proved by rigorous visual experiments. The result of the project is to be shared with the public through direct multi-sensorial engagement such as viewing, touching, holding or spinning.
