On Returning to Allenhurst, Georgia

Returning to Allenhurst late this summer, I came equip with a Holga 120CFN along with a Polaroid back and Fujifilm instant film. Having haphazardly shot on this location with the same media years before, I aimed to retain some order, in order to create a more knowable depiction of Georgia, while capturing this dreamy landscape in a likewise manner. Previously working with Polaroid film, now discontinued, my reliance on it's tendency to warp hues in a favorably surreal way was met with the challenge of photographing the back roads of Georgia as dreamy while using Fujifilm which takes a relative amount of manipulation and coaxing to produce a similar aesthetic. Whether by way of subject or hues, I knew that recreating what I once had with Polaroid film would be not be an easy feat; one that would require a relative amount of rigidity I sought to avoid for fear that these would further deter me from my goal.

Ultimately I chose to abandon that desire for dreamy hues where it could not be acquired without great strain, and for the first time focused on capturing singular powerful images and combing ordinary images to bring the viewer into my understanding of this foreign place, so stark in contrast from a city devoid of any feature synonymous with Allenhurst.
