The Hague City Library
The Netherlands, 2010. Bibliotheek Den Haag. Ground floor transformation of one of Holland’s largest libraries.
Situation
Large library in downtown The Hague with 1990′s looks and features undergoes largest renewal in its twenty year existence.
Target
Create an transparent space that invites people to come in and enjoy innovative library features, have a cup of coffee and watch city life passing by.
Action
Make sure it doesn’t look too much like a library. Reduce counter space and increase display areas. Open up views on the libraries escalators and strongly focus on espresso bars and internet to go units for leisure use.
Result
A modern yet timeless public facility where people want to gather and feel free to walk in. A library that sets itself apart from traditional values.
Did you know?
aatvos has been involved with the The Hague City Library ever since it was build in 1992. In spite of Aat winning the first price in the interior design competition at those days, the design was carried out by another party. However, aatvos continued to shape the libraries interior in many assignments over the years, of which this ground floor project is the latest.
