Michael Wilkinson's profile

WIS TAVERN / SMOG VEIL RECORDS

a former tavern was converted to a live-work space for a husband-wife and their record label business.  the ground floor serves as offices and overnight accomodations for touring bands, as well as an impromptu performance space.  the second floor is private living space, and the roof is a garden and power plant, providing over 40% of the electricity for the building via photovoltaic solar panels and vertical axis wind turbines.
the photovoltaic panel array was designed as a canopy, shielding humans from sun but harnessing energy from it.  the underside of the panels was left exposed intentionally to leverage the aesthetic of the technology.
vertical axis wind turbines contribute to the overall power generation of the property as well as the sculptural and aesthetic quality of the roofscape.
every inch of the roof was captured, either to produce power, provide vegetation, or serve a programmatic function.
two vertical axis wind turbines rest in a custom-designed cage of painted steel and aluminum grate material.
the exterior appearance of the building was preserved on the north (front) elevation where existing window openings were replaced with new, high-performance insulated windows.
terrazo floors throughout the building contain hydronic heating powered by geothermal wells drilled under the basement.  new stair landing was constructed of salvaged roof joists laminated together into massive blocks.
a recurring theme at all stairs is the use of salvaged roof and floor joists, nails removed and sanded.
master bathroom terrazo floor contains aggregate of broken mirrors and shattered vinyl lp's, which were ground into bits by the clients with their blender and food processor.
roof seating area and firepit overlook the dining terrace and power generating canopy.
custom table of synthetic deck boards integrates with screen wall, bench, and deck.
a tiny clerestory window (right of table) brings natural ilght into the living room below.
reconfigured masonry openings openly express the former condition on the west wall.  The south elevation was completely opened to accomodate a new garage door and windows to the master suite above.
