Brand Identity for Melbourne Cinematheque

My proposed identity for the Melbourne Cinémathèque
draws inspiration from film title sequences, in particular
examples from the late 1950s and 1960s. This identity
was heavily influenced by Wayne Fitzgerald’s design
for Auntie Mame (1958) and Saul Bass’ work on Vertigo
(1958).

The identity aims to mimic perspective through a kaleidoscope,
utilising a multitude of key items as representation
of various film genres. These items were
given a monochromatic palette, made to reference the
assortment of niche, compelling films featured at ACMI.
The gritty texture enforced on the imagery reflects the
traditional methods of film and is representative of their
time period.

The typeface used is designed to reflect a modernist
styling, aiming to not distract from the chaotic nature
of the kaleidoscope imagery. The vibrant colour utilised
for the type creates a distinctive contrast between the
imagery and information, drawing in the attention from
the audience.
