This was one of my first 3D Modelling Projects in 2000 (11 years ago) after leaving University.  Due to long render times on my 200 MHz PC I had to resort to well placed Omni Lights and Texture Maps to create realistic looking water.  The subtle shadows were added later in Photoshop.
