Autodesk Generative Design Bench

Whilst studying my MSc at PrintCity, we were given access to Autodesk’s generative design software within Fusion 360.  During the course we had a lecture on using Generative Design by Steve Cox. Whilst in the lecture, we discussed how generative design outcomes would be perceived by the end user. The structures that generative design produces can look very organic and therefore people may not trust the outcome it produces.  To see how someone with no experience with generative design would perceive it, I decided to create something that everyone can relate to.
My idea was to create a generative bench design which would show off the software’s capabilities. To put it to the test, I made the bench cantilevered to see the geometry it would create. In Fusion 360 I create a basic generative simulation, inputting various materials and manufacturing processes. After several outcomes were generated, I selected my preferred geometry based on the overall aesthetic and strength of the part. In the first Instance I put the design online and asked people the question, which side of the bench would you sit?

After getting a positive reaction online, I decided to make a 1:5 scale model using the Formlabs Form 3 printer. I chose SLA as I knew it could handle the complex geometry and intricate details. Afterwards I posted the prototype online to promote my work. Autodesk picked up the design on Twitter and decided they wanted to make the bench at full scale.
The bench was produced by Aristo Cast and Autodesk using my original design files produced in Fusion 360. It was investment cast in six sections using FDM 3D printing due to manufacturing constraints. The six sections were cast in Aluminium 356 which were then welded together at the Autodesk Technology Centre in Birmingham. A couple of years later post COVID, the bench was donated back to Manchester Metropolitan University where it resides in PrintCity. Over the last year many people have visited our facility and sat on the bench. It shows our students at PrintCity what is possible with a 3D print and social media. The bench also inspires students from all walks of life and different disciplines can do with new technologies.
