Mallaig
Mallaig is a fishing village on the west coast of the Scottish Highlands. It was originally best known as a herring port - at one time the busiest in Europe. However in recent times it has become a well-known tourist destination, especially for day-trippers on the Jacobite steam train which stops in the village at least once a day in summer. The village also has a number of restaurants, pubs, gift shops and my favourites - a particularly good bakery, and a particularly good second hand bookshop! You can also go on wildlife watching cruises, or catch ferries to Inverie on the Knoydart peninsula (home to the most remote pub in Britain), the Isle of Skye, the Small Isles, and South Uist in the Outer Hebrides, which is where I was heading this day!
