Subtle difference

The brief demands us to explore and experiment with woodland/forestry techniques in order to achieve a temporary design solution for Pelletsdown neighborhood in Dublin City, Ireland. Even though there are existing developments suitable for apartments and businesses alike, the process is somewhat incomplete and we are tasked to propose a design solution for the remainder of the site.

The time scale for the project is 21 years, which implies the importance of succession and phasing as we analyse the site through significant aspects in year 0, 7, 14 and 21.
One of the early stage analytical diagrams showing Pelletstown within 2km of its surroundings.

Various analysis diagrams identifying key issues within the site, such as discontinuity, leftover spaces and ecological relationship.
Working model, abstract concept
Analysis of Fred Williams work following his ability to experiment with forms and express sentiment and meaning through his paintings in landscape as abstract forms, shapes and colours, further arise interest in exploring concept of forms, objects and their relation to surrounding environment.
Ecological succession over 21 years
Design concept initiated by extracting abstract form of local forest material with correlation to further exploration of surrounding ecologies, the project eventually leads its focus towards introduction, alteration and containment as well as preservation of different biotopes found within the nearby environment of Pelletstown and the manner in which they correspond towards the proposed housing typologies.
Each of the new vegetated areas has been derived from traditional ecosystems found within wider context of the site and therefore are designed to gradually integrate with the existing through forestry methods favoring native plant species.

The timescale of project stretches over 21 years following 8 phases of steady continuous development in which both  - ecosystems and housing typologies are simultaneously established, altered and expanded in what is depicted as the ‘subtle difference’ of Pelletstown.
