WE LOVE PLASTIC: An AI Product Design Project
Exploring Sustainable Design through the creative use of fire, rocks, and the capabilities of AI Imagination
Project Brief:
Designing a Contemporary Art Piece to Raise Awareness of Plastic Pollution
Project Objective:
The objective of this project is to design a contemporary art piece that complements large form art prints and serves as a companion piece for art collectors. The art piece should bring the disturbing realities of plastic pollution to life and create a deeper connection between the art collector and the artist's universe.
Artist Ivan Puñal García's work WE LOVE PLASTIC
Product Design Inspiration based on "Fossils of the Present"
Peculiar rocks uncovered on the shores of beaches in Hawaii, Portugal, and other places, were created from volcanic activity reacting to plastic pollution, merging the materials into a brand new form of geology. Scientists are calling them “the fossils of the present”.
Creation
Experimentation with mixing rocks, recycled, trashed plastics, heating, inside a silicone rock-shaped mold.
Finalization
After an intense process that required a lot of experimentation and trial & error, I was able to create a unique and beautiful vessel that captured the essence of the story behind Garcia’s artwork. This vessel was an open-able "plastiglomerate" rock with a storage space on the inside that stores notes, sketchbook, and usb-file of the artist's early draft and story.
