RAINDROPS - Projection Art

RAINDROPS
"Raindrops" is an innovative generative projection art project that engages in a bi-directional interaction with the environment, resulting in unpredictable outcomes. The objective is to establish a self-sustaining system that continuously receives information from an object and transmits processed data to create an endless loop. The processed data is gradually refined and undergoes a loss of control over time, leading to a visually compelling display.
The installation employs a live camera to capture images of the environment, from which a random selection of pixels are sampled. These samples are then processed and enlarged through a custom-designed program, generating a live graphic. The resulting image is projected back into the environment via a projector, where it is recaptured by the live camera, initiating an infinite loop.
The installations are set up in various locations around the workplace, both indoors and outdoors. The weak lighting conditions in the environment initially lead to faint colours, which gradually intensify with each processing cycle. Over time, the building surfaces become adorned with vivid colours, resembling a cascade of colourful raindrops.
The three-dimensional architectural surfaces provide additional variables, causing the projection and camera-captured image to change continually. As a result, the projected image blends seamlessly with the building surface, giving an impression of being covered with rust or moss. Although the form and appearance of the building may impact the pattern, the colour spots develop freely on the architecture's surface, producing varied outcomes with each cycle.
