NO.8 MIAMI FLOATING HOUSING

Historically, people have built phenomenal housing systems to tackle the problems of urbanization. One of the most outstanding solutions for using space on the water is the Ponte Vecchio, planned as a dense city on a bridge. Houses in Evora aqueduct are also good examples of how people naturally take advantage of an existing structure. Based on these observations, We suggest a linear prefab housing system installed under a pedestrian deck structure.

The suggested structure extends the cultural axis of Little Haiti from land to sea and forest in the Legion Picnic Island, with housing that can intensify contextual continuity. A truss system enables the construction of a flexible prefab housing cluster. Hence, units are easily installed and replaced with new ones, accommodating gentrified residents of Little Haiti.

As a response to floods and rising sea levels, recycled floats installed under the structure allow it to rise up slowly along vertical columns. Underwater, a network of pipes and vents enables passive heating and cooling, meanwhile creating hideouts for sea creatures. As hydrophytes start to settle on the pipes and build a biodiverse filter, sediments begin to settle, incrementally raising the seabed. Finally, the structure creates a growing beach for people.
