COMPOSING WITH GLYPHS

COMPOSING WITH GLYPHS
Stempel Garamond and Neue Haas Grotesk Glyphs Compositions
This project is about the two typographic compositions that I created using two typefaces (Stempel Garamond and Neue Haas Grotesk) and the principles of design. The finished compositions aim to feel complete and harmonious, where the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. It’s an exploration of these typefaces by expressing their own characteristics using the principles of design, while learning their type anatomy.

Before diving into my two glyph compositions, I want to share three concepts that I have learned while completing this project.
CONCEPT 1
Each typeface has its own characteristics and personality. In this project, we explored a serif and a sans-serif typeface, which are Stempel Garamond and Neue Haas Grotesk. Both of these typefaces communicate differently. Serifs are often used in traditional mediums such as newspapers, magazines, and books. That’s why serif fonts are typically seen as more classic and refined and are used by companies that want to exude these traits. The distinct characteristics and history of serif fonts give people a feeling of elegance, confidence, and trustworthiness. On the other hand, sans-serifs communicate a completely different message. While serif fonts focus heavily on embracing tradition and history, sans serif fonts take the opposite approach and embrace simplicity and the feeling of being modern. Sans-serif fonts give off a feeling of being casual, informal, friendly, and very approachable. Companies that want their brands to appear more youthful and relatable tend to use sans-serif fonts.
CONCEPT 2
Principles of design are one of the most important concepts that I have learned from completing these glyph compositions. It played a big role while doing my sketches and compositions. The principles of design are the rules a designer must follow to create an effective and successful composition. To create effective and successful compositions or designs, a designer must first understand the fundamental principles of design before diving in or creating compositions.
CONCEPT 3
Typography is an art. It is the art of arranging letters and text in a way that makes the copy clear, legible, and visually appealing to the viewer. It involves typefaces, appearance, and structure, which aim to elicit certain emotions and convey specific messages. In short, typography is what brings the text to life. Typography is everywhere we look. It’s in the books we read, on the websites we visit, and even in everyday life—on street signs, bumper stickers, and product packaging. Good typography creates a strong visual hierarchy, and that’s one of the things that I have learned while completing this project.
