Dashboard Data Driven Story
This was an assignment from BYUI ART331-INFORMATION DESIGN
STEP 1 | FIND A STORY
Potential questions the data can answer:
What is causing the icebergs to melt?
How much of the ice burgs have melted?
Are we seeing results of this right now?
Will the speed of melting increase?
How long will they stick around?

Chosen story/question:
How much have the icebergs melted?

Potential graphs:
Line graph
visual pictograph
bar graph

Supporting data:
The data shows that over the course of 80 years we have had -27.174 mean cumulative mass balance.

Necessary text:
Explanatory text of what the information above means. After creating the graphs I can put into perspective how much of the original whole has melted away. I can use numbers and percentages to emphasize this.
STEP 02 | RESEARCH: CHARTS & GRAPHS
Step 03 | Research: Dashboard styles
Step 04 | Chart & Graph Visual Style sketches
Step 05 | One Graph in 3 Different Styles
Step 06 | Charts and Digital Roughs
Step 07 | User Testing
User A:
This is a pretty demonstration of graphs. From my vast experience with dashboards, I would say that the title is too big. The colors are off on the bottom left hand corner. The test is too large in the bottom right text box. Typically you want items to line up, as such I would extend the top chart to the edge to align with the text box below. It looks like in that same chart that there is a white box at the bottom
that is going into it. Also, from a style preference I like to see the chart boxes slightly. I would use an off-white. Not sure if that will work with the current placement of charts. Dashboards that I’m familiar with are perfect rectangles.

User B:
Graphic are clean and precise. Easy to read and understand. Colors go well together. Pleasing to the eye. I like that some of the graphics are offset. More appealing/interesting to look at. I would add maybe a little more space between the charts. They are a little crowded and hard to see where one begins and one ends.

User C:
I would work on making sure things are lined up nicely. Right now it looks like they were plopped in without making sure they were matching each other in the space.
STEP 09 | REVISION PLAN BASED ON USER TESTING
What changes do you plan to make based on the feedback from your users?
I will add more of a grid and keep them in boxes, and make sure they are the same size. I will make sure the title isn’t so big, and maybe span the whole top. I will put them in rectangles like one user stated above. I will also space out the graphs a little more so they are not running together. I have a lot of work to do in order to make my design look better and more cohesive! I am grateful for all the feedback I received from user testing.
