“Code as Craft” is the Etsy software engineering team’s philosophy. Etsy’s engineering team approaches writing code with the same care and inspiration as our sellers do in making or sourcing their items. We talk about the tools we use internally and with the larger engineering community, celebrate the experiments that work, and learn from the ones that could work better. It’s all about improving our code-as-craft. Engineers write about their experiences building and running the Etsy platform on the Code as Craft blog: http://codeascraft.com.
In 2012, Etsy’s Design Studio developed an identity system to brand and celebrate this engineering philosophy. The suite included the Code as Craft logo and promotional items (e.g., stickers, T-shirts, and buttons) that have been widely distributed at tech talks, conferences, and recruiting events around the world.
