Conceptual Book Cover: Treasure Island

The project is to create three conceptual book covers. One typographic, one made of handmade materials (not on the computer, but put into Photoshop later), and one is the designer's choice. The book covers should convey the main themes of the book through symbolism, and not just the plotline.

The book I chose is Treasure Island, by Robert Luis Stevenson.
Typography

I cut out pieces of paper and burned the edges for the title. I also photographed fire, and used a blending mode for the background.

I think the fire is an unexpected symbol for this book, but it still works. It helps the theme of betrayal. The burnt paper is a main symbol in the book, and the overall mood of the book matches.
Handmade

I arranged shells that I found into the shape of a skull. The texture is splattered watercolor that has lowered opacity.

I hesitated to use the skull as a symbol, because it’s a popular one for the book, but I made it out of an unexpected object, so I think it worked. I also really like the composition.
Designer's Choice

The wolf silhouette is cut out of paper, and the coins were photographed. The texture is the same watercolor splatter.

Wolves are not a part of the book, but I think it still portrays the theme of greed very well. I think it makes sense.
