Rock temples are one of the most sustained elements of our religious creativity. They have been the greatest canvases for the temple artists. Interestingly, rock temples also appear as the subject of a composition, particularly in the Kandyan School. Chandika’s contemporary depiction that combines the ‘Pidurangla’ rock and its ancient temple is rooted in this tradition but has been expressed very differently. One element it clearly shares with Sri Lanka’s medieval artistic tradition is the hidden – but critical – detail. Have you noticed that the Deva-deities(drawn in the classical style) are paying homage to the Buddha?
