Darkness Effect is an interactive&wearable installation.

In the virtual world, no one knows who you are and where you come from, so people tend to pretend or confess themselves and establish different “personal settings” in different virtual spaces. Uncertain and complex identity is the best protection color.

Just like the bioluminescence in the ocean, light is their characteristic, in this way they defend against predators, prey, attract mates and so on. But in the virtual world, the relationship between people is gradually weakening, becoming fake, and vulnerable.

《黑暗效应》是一个交互式的可穿戴装置。 在虚拟世界里,没有人知道你是谁,你来自哪里,所以人们往往会在不同 的虚拟空间里假装或坦白自己,建立不同的 “个人设定”。不确定而复杂的 身份是最好的保护色。就像海洋中的生物发光一样,光是它们的特征,通 过这种方式来抵御捕食者、猎物、吸引配偶等。但在虚拟世界里,人与人 之间的关系逐渐弱化,变得虚假,变得脆弱。
Inspiration & Research
Most bioluminescence live in oceans of a certain depth, which means that sunlight may be difficult to reach, and the environment is almost dark there. For these creatures, dark is a color that can wraps them.they can hide in the shadows, the emitted light is the unique survival mechanism.
I am inspired by them: in the dark, it is easy for people to reduce the sense of alertness. The darkness will magnify all our thoughts and emotions, thus revealing the true feelings and promoting the communication.

Charles Darwin described bioluminescence:

While sailing in these latitudes on one very dark night, the sea presented a wonderful and most beautiful spectacle. There was a fresh breeze, and every part of the surface, which during the day is seen as foam, now glowed with a pale light.


大多数生物发光体生活在一定深度的海洋中,这意味着阳光可能难 以到达,那里的环境几乎是黑暗的。对于这些生物来说,黑暗是一 种可以包裹它们的颜色,它们可以躲在阴影里,发出的光是独特的 生存机制。

Clothing Procduction
Initially, we tried on fabrics and clothing styles. The light fabrics of organza could not support the weight of the lace and could not hide the ardiuno motherboard, so we decided to use organza as the lace deco- ration, and the space cotton as our whole clothes. The main fabric is light and soft, and it can fix the light bulb on the front of the garment and the wire on the reverse side.

Inspired by the underwater creatures, I tried different styles and finally considered the need for interaction. I determined that the three styles were distributed in different areas of the cloth, and they were able to interact with people while being graceful.


最初,我们尝试了各种面料和服装款式。由于欧根纱的轻薄面料无法支撑各种花边的重量,也无法隐藏ardiuno主板,所以我们决定用欧根纱作为花边本身的装饰,用太空棉作为我们的整件衣服的主体。面料轻盈柔软,可以固定衣服正面的灯泡,以及反面的导线。

受到发光生物的启发,我们尝试了不同的风格,最后考虑到互动的需要。确定了三种款式分布在布面的不同区域,它们在美观与优雅的同时也能与人互动。
We used capacitive sensors (wires and foil) and ultrasonic sensors as basis of interaction. In the dark environments, when people approach or touch the cloth, they will trigger different light changes in different areas, like the interaction between people, throwing away fear and timidity, trying and exploring the relationship boldly.

我们用电容式传感器(导线和箔片)和超声波传感器来触发这个装置。在黑暗 的环境中,当人们接近或触摸装置时,会引发不同区域的光照变化,就像人与 人之间的互动一样,抛开恐惧和胆怯,大胆尝试和探索关系。
