Adobe Creative Residency: Chaekgeori

A unique type of Korean still-life painting called Chaekgeori (pronounced check-oh-ree), translated as “books and things.”
Symbolism exists to adorn and enrich,
not to create an artificial sense of profundity.”
Stephen King
I was selected by Adobe Creative Residency Community Fund to work on an illustration in Adobe Fresco. I had a lot of fun playing around with the motion features and reference layers in Fresco.

This particular project was a 'Minhwa' inspired Korean traditional painting that centered on the subject of Chaekgori and its link to various symbolizations.

Chaekgeori are Korean still-life paintings that were popular during the early Joseon dynasty. They were typically placed in studios or schools, and they represented a reverence for scholarship and learning. Scholarly instruments are represented in this painting among flowers, plants, food, unusual imported artifacts, and religious implements.

These subjects convey a variety of meanings; for example, eggplant has the meaning of the promise of a long life, while musical instruments imply the meaning of harmony.

I really enjoyed adding motion to my artwork using Adobe Fresco. In particular, combining the Frame by Frame and motion paths techniques was useful while animating butterflies with wings. The reference layer was also useful to keep the sketching/drawing outlines separate from the fill color.

I participated as an invited artist to URBAN BREAK 2022, which is Asia's largest urban & street art fair. I shared my experience of using Adobe Fresco while introducing my artwork.
