The Achilles tendon is the large tendon at the back of the ankle. It connects the calf muscle to the heel bone. The Achilles tendon helps you point your foot downward, rise on your toes, and push off when you walk. A tear of the Achilles tendon can occur with a sudden force on the foot when the foot is not in proper position.
