Placemaking Project/Booklet

Placemaking Project/Booklet
This was a project completed for my environmental design/wayfinding class. The focus for this project was on placemaking, where graphics and architecture in one's environment are designed and developed to create a personality for a space while promoting a welcoming atmosphere for its patrons.
We were given the task of creating wall graphics for two spaces in the Graphic Design department of Stonehill college. The current spaces are white and monotone, creating a dull and uninviting environment. The designs we created were then placed into a booklet that could easily be presented to the college as potential designs to rejuvenate the design departments brand and image.

As mentioned above, the current space is in dire need of a redesign. It is entirely white with no windows, inspiring elements of bare bones brutalism with little in the way of inspirational design. My proposal was to introduce design to the space to give it a sense of purpose while providing the space with a much needed face lift.

The first space in particular was the design space itself. Rather than a blank white wall, I added a design that focused on the basics of design using a mix of organic shape, inorganic line, and a variety of colors to create a space that inspired its occupants and set the tone for the space.

While my first graphic focused on those that would be using the space, adding color and vibrancy to the area, the second graphic was meant to act as an introduction to the Graphic Design department. There are currently no signs or wayfinding that identifies the department to the public, leaving people to wonder the purpose of the classrooms as the wander the halls.
My proposed graphic clearly states the purpose of the space while incorporating those basic elements found in the previous design. However, with this piece, I wanted to celebrate typography and its place in Stonehill's design curriculum and to Graphic Design as a whole. Because of this, a pattern of typographic art was developed and placed inside of each letter, representing the multiple variations of design.
