PROJECT STATEMENT
In the past years, there has been an increased interest in the design of sustainable and green buildings from a sense of responsibility to the environment and the reduction of our carbon footprints. The objective of this project was to develop a cohesive design proposal in our group for the Design Challenge track in the US Department of Energy Solar Decathlon Competition. 513 Genesis is going to be the new spot for community engagement. It features single and double height voids to allow for natural ventilation and lighting through the corridors as well as shading devices to minimize direct sun and heat gains, solar panels on the roofs for energy and a ground floor plaza with ground floor mixed use retail for those living in the buildings as well as the surrounding community. The retail options are things that were lacking in this area of downtown. Connection to the San Pedro Creek connection was also an important feature to the project to encourage more visitors to the public spaces of this community hub as well as encourage more traffic to the newly renovated stretch of the Creek.  The units are for mixed income families that feature efficiencies, one and two bedroom apartments. The target audience is young professionals, single and small families.
