Placemaking in Cushing-Martin

Coursework for Exhibit and Wayfinding Design
Placemaking in the Student Design Studio

The Problem: Cushing-Martin is the building that people either know too well, or they think it is the Martin Institute. Cushing-Martin is home to much of the Visual and Performing Arts department, but many students and visitors only get to know it as the “Shovel Building.” Even those who do spend their time here may not know about the third floor. Moreover, nothing about the building screams “Arts Department.” The exterior is fairly uninspiring, and the interior is much of the same, including the Graphic Design lab.

The Solution: Cushing-Martin will be rebranded as the Visual and Performing Arts Building. It is not a matter of name, but of design. Explosive graphics, thematic quotes, and thoughtful uses of space bring the building to life. S-shaped graphics and a richer version of Stonehill’s purple call on the school’s name while also bringing some color and unity to the space. Overall, this concept is meant create an inspirational and utilitarian space that fosters creativity and collaboration.
