Optical Illusion Kinetic Sculpture (Analog Clock)

The Optical Illusion Analog Clock works as both an Kinetic Sculpture and a Workable Analog Clock. Inspired by the kinetic sculptures of Michael Cutler, the kinetic sculpture aims to work as a mesmerizing and relaxing art piece. This kinetic sculpture went through several revisions, first as a Arduino motor powered sculpture with laser-cut wooden blades, then an analog powered clock.

Finalised Designs for Optical Illusion Analog Clock
The designs for the blades of the kinetic clock had to meet specific requirements to ensure that the illusion could be seen. One of these requirements was that the blades needed to be thin enough to allow both the first and second layer to be visible when the second hand is in motion. Additionally, the design could not have more than two twists, as this would require enlarging the entire face, making it too heavy for the face to move smoothly. Furthermore, the centerpiece had to be sized appropriately to ensure that the blades could be seen clearly without obstructing the square analog motor. After many revisions, these 3 design were finalized.
