Editorial design | Narrative Photography
Brief Summary
This project consists of a horizontal layout that illustrates a narrative focusing on one or more of the following qualities: shape, texture, pattern, colour and tonal values. A narrative as a ‘concept’ is curated through the use of photography.
The layouts consist of both documentary photography and fashion photography. The aim of this project is to capture scenes that are visually striking and to use these photographs to convey a narrative.

Design Strategy
The visual qualities focused on within this project are shape and texture. This was achieved through the repetition of line (throughout each of the final photographs as well as the physical (on objects themselves) and visual textures (through repetition). The repetition of line throughout aided in visually tying all the photographs together in the final lineup as well as helps lead the viewer's eyes through each of the photographs. Further visual harmony was achieved through the editing of the final images.
Documentary Photography
We were required to take our documentary photographs with our phone camera.
Phone used: Samsung Galaxy S8
*All photos shown have only been edited into black and white without any adjustments to the contrast, brightness, etc.*
Fashion Photography
We were required to take our fashion photographs with a DSLR camera.
Camera used: Canon EOS 550D
Lens used: Canon 50mm
Models used: Robin Nel and Zaiboon Gani
All photos shown have been edited into black and white without any adjustments to the contrast, brightness, etc.
Final Series Layout
All final photographs were edited to have better visual harmony.
For the print deliverable, a final curves level was used to adjust the brightness of the photographic lineup (as photographs print darker than what they appear on a digital screen).
