Girls Sanctuary - Top 20 Finalists
Location: Near Al-Mada'in, by the Tigris River, Iraq.
Plot size: 15,000 m2
Our conceptual reflection of the girls' sanctuary project lies on the restructuring of the Iraqi orphan girls' identity.
Design process is based mainly on four stages.
The first would be to dedicate a personal space to the child, with removable walls, allowing her to have a certain level of privacy. This structure allows the individual a private area of refuge and serenity.
The second step would be to work on the intimate primary bonds. The personal space opens up to create a bond of direct intimacy with her roommate.
The personality of the individual begins to form through individual and dual work.
On the third level, we opted to structure all the spaces around a patio. The green, open, central space ensures a sense of sharing and creates family bonds within the dwelling.
The unit presents a personality structuring process for the individual through three essential stages; working on oneself, establishing intimate links, and nurturing a sense of responsibility and sharing. The fourth stage is based on creating social links and defining oneself within society.
The unit is part of a social network within the village created. The individual creates social links through shared spaces, such as the plaza, workshops, spaces dedicated to physical, cultural and intellectual activities.
The village is made of interconnected units weaving the story of a lost heritage. Through the hierarchy of spaces, the child will know his purpose.
