Ano Poli, or Upper City, is the historic part of Thessaloniki. There, old, traditional and small - scaled architecture meets the modern blocks of flats. Thus, in most parts of Ano Poli its unique character is lost. On Theoflilou Street, one can point out all the different types of architecture. Listed buildings in bad condition, restored houses, modern constructions with a traditional, but fake, image and generic blocks of flats. For the purpose of the Design Studio: Historic Places - Rebirth and Rennovation, the analysis on the neighbourhood begins at the scale of urban planning. Some soft uses are added to the general housing character of the neighbourhood, which is enhanced by the creation of a public space with green spaces and water, an old and lost element of Theofilou Street. As regards the morphology of the new structures, the analysis of Ano Poli has paved the way for a very specific strategy: small - scale houses with 2 or 3 floors, placed on the road boundaries with a small garden on the back and south part of the site. In each new house, a strong contrast is dominant: the ground floor made from concrete is a "heavy" volume, with small and few openings, while the upper floor is wooden, thus much more light with bigger opennings. This is a characteristic found in traditional architecture of the area. In addition to the creation of new volumes, some existing buildings are re-designed, in order to adopt the new character of the neighbourhood, and offer a better quality of living.
