Centenary of Peking Union Medical College

In the early autumn of 1921, Rockefeller II and Welch, President of Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine (hereinafter referred to as Johns Hopkins School of Medicine), boarded the ocean ferry "Asian express". During the month long journey, they were accompanied by a large box of books devoted to Asia and East Asia.

They made a special trip for a Chinese hospital. On September 16 of this year, that is, 100 years ago today, the towering Union Medical College Hospital will hold an opening ceremony in Beijing. In the six years of preparation since 1915, the Rockefeller Foundation has invested tens of millions of dollars in Concord.

Celebrities gathered at the ceremony. In addition to government representatives from China's presidential palace, the Ministry of the interior and the Ministry of education, there were also presidents and scientists of world-class universities and representatives of the international health organization. In parallel with the opening meeting, it was an unprecedented academic exchange event. The above heavyweight guests participated in a week-long in-depth discussion, speech exchange and clinical display in Xiehe, which brought fresh blood to China's academic research and social education.

It was incredible to hold such a large scientific event in China at that time.

In the 70 years before the completion of Xiehe, China fell to the bottom of history since the Opium War, the foundation of modern medicine was almost zero, and the road to save the nation from subjugation and survival was difficult.

Learning from the West has become the idea of many people with lofty ideals, but it is not a simple thing at the same time. Both Wei Yuan, who "learned from foreigners and developed skills to control foreigners", and foreign students who had learned from foreigners, such as Hu Shi and Lu Xun, were colliding with Western civilization, experiencing pain and trying to blend.

After the West opened China's door with strong ships and guns, charities supporting China's modernization through commercial civilization followed - Chinese modern medicine "East Qilu, West China, South Xiangya and North Xiehe", all donated to foreign charities in that period. Among them, the Peking Union Medical College Hospital donated and founded by the Rockefeller Foundation has been the peak of modern medicine in China since then.

Mobil oil company founded by Rockefeller I once monopolized the oil refining industry and oil pipe business in the United States. Even in the Far East, its storage terminal can stretch more than 6 miles on the Bank of the Huangpu River. After becoming a rich man, at the end of the 19th century, he began to turn more energy to charity and had a profound impact on Bill Gates a hundred years later. In 1913, the Rockefeller Foundation was officially registered. For it at that time, "the whole world was a vast testing ground", and first of all, it focused on China, which was poor and weak and stood at the turning point of history.

Because of the persistence of Rockefeller II, every brick, tile, professor and student of Concorde are benchmarked to the world's top standards. In 1917, Peking Union Medical College enrolled students; In 1919, girls were recruited at the same time; In 1921, Union Medical College Hospital was put into operation. Like Johns Hopkins Medical School and Johns Hopkins Hospital, Concorde medical school and Concorde hospital have also been built into an inseparable cutting-edge system integrating teaching, scientific research and clinic.

Academician Chang Wangchen summed it up as "the elite among the elites" because "considering the interests of the people and the ultimate interests of mankind, the ultimate interests are health and life, so it is not allowed that these people are not high-quality, not smart enough, not smart enough, and not noble enough".

Concorde's significance to modern China was far more than that at that time. Before and after the May 4th Movement in 1919, Mr. de and Mr. Sai were introduced into China in the storm. The Millennium imperial system has become history, and the ancient East urgently needs a modern storm. As an important part of science, modern medicine began to take root in China, accompanied by the medical spirit inherited by Xiehe for a century.
