Affordable Housing - Courtyard House

This project investigates a low cost housing typology which is climate sensitive, low maintenance, flexible, modularly expandable and transferable to both suburban and inner city infill contexts. The selected house type, the ‘courtyard house’ is commonly used in mediterranean regions, suiting the Western Australian climate and is highly adaptable to different orientations. The courtyard house also offers a sense of enclosure and privacy often lacking in high and medium density housing. Affordability is achieved through simplicity in design, materials and construction. The single storey courtyard house is a ‘less is more’ approach. The internal organisation of the courtyard house provides options for family based use [a number of generations in one house] as well as opportunities for shared occupation by friends or tenants. Two bedrooms are accessible from inside the house whilst two bedrooms are independently accessible from the courtyard. The modular connectability of the house also allows two adjoining courtyards to be connected creating one larger shared open space. Over a period of time this offers opportunities for young adults to buy and connect the house next to their parents or elderly grandparents to buy and connect next to their children. This establishes a type of generational modular expandability encouraging social connections.
